Testing course material

Mika Tompuri edited this page Sep 11, 2024 · 5 revisions

This page explains how course material and exercises can be tested and piloted before course launch.

There are a few ways in which course material can be tested while it is still in draft mode and not available to the public.

Course material creators

As a course material creator, you can view all course material pages in student view. This means that you see the material exactly as a student would see the page and you can answer all exercises.

How to reset exercises

You can remove exercise submissions and reset exercise points.

  1. go to overview tab in admin mode.
  2. Scroll down until you see buttons
  • reset my own progress on the course: Remove all exercise submissions that you have done and reset your points on the course.
  • reset progress for all students on the course (works only on draft courses): Remove all exercise submissions by all users. This only works on courses that are in draft mode.

Group of students or other testers

Option 1: Give individual access to each tester

While the course is draft mode, students cannot access the course material. Here's how you can enable a group of students or other testers to test the course material before it is opened to the public.

  1. Ask testers to create a user account and log into the platform once. Steps are listed under the heading Register as user on the Get Started wiki page.
  2. After a tester has completed the steps above, go to Permissions tab in admin mode.
  3. Enter tester email address and select the material viewer role and click add user button.

After this, the tester can view course material pages and complete exercises even if the course is in draft mode. With the material viewer role, the testers cannot access the admin mode and therefore the role is ideal for testing. You can send the users the link to the course front page.

Option 2: Make course available through link

To avoid administrative work of option 1, you can also make the course material available as an unlisted course:

  • An unlisted course is not visible in courses.mooc.fi navigation.
  • Anyone with a link to the course can view the course material and complete exercises. Users still need to create a user account.

How to make a course 'unlisted'

  1. Go to Overview-tab in the admin view.
  2. Click Edit button.
  3. Uncheck Draft
  4. Check Unlisted
  5. Save changes

If you are unable to add user and see a message similar to the image above, make sure that

  • the tester has created a MOOC.fi user account
  • the tester has logged into the courses.mooc.fi platform once
  • you are trying to add the tester with the correct email address (the one that they have used to register for the platform.
