This page lists the features available on the courses.mooc.fi platform.

Visual content editor

Creating and editing page content is built on the WordPress Gutenberg editor. All editing is done through blocks of various types that you can move around the page. Editing is straight-forward and requires no knowledge of programming.

These blocks can be used to edit content on course material pages: List of blocks

Exercises

The platform includes various exercise types that you can embed to your course material pages. In general, exercises allow you to test students' learning. You can configure

  • instructions,
  • feedback messages (what the student sees when they submit correct / incorrect answers),
  • number of tries
  • number of points available for each exercise.

Current exercise types include multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and essay exercises, for example. You can find the complete list of exercise types on the Exercise Types page.

Automatic completions

Teachers can set up automatic completions to reduce manual grading work. Automatic completions are based on number of attempted exercises and total points received.

Feedback and suggestions for changes

The platform allows students to leave feedback or suggestions to specific parts of the course material. Students simply highlight individual words or entire paragraphs in the text and write a suggestion for improved wording or typo fix. A teacher can easily view the suggested text next to the original and change the course material with the click of a button - no need to navigate to a particular page and find the typo.

Certificates

You can set up certificates that students can access after they have passed the course. A certificate template that you create in image editing software can be imported to the system and overlaid with students' name, date, and a verification link.

Reference management

The platform has a reference management system that helps you create clean materials where long references do not interfere with readability. The reference format is based on BibTex.

Instructions: How to add references

Glossary

You can create list for abbreviations and other terms you'd like to explain. Once students hover over a term or abbreviation in the course material, they will see the explanation you've given.

Statistics

You can view various statistics related to your course:

  • How many users have attempted each exercise.
  • Heat maps related to how many active users your course has each day.
  • Number of exercise answer submissions per weekday and hour.
  • Visitors by country
  • Most visited pages
  • Devices (Device type, Operating System, Browser)

Language versions

You can create multiple language versions for a course. Students can easily change the language version they want to complete in the course material.

Course instances

You can set up separate points list for students from different universities for example.
