Configure automatic completions
This page explains how conditions for automatic course completions can be configured.
Automatic completions enable students who complete enough exercises and receive enough points to pass courses automatically. This reduces the need for teacher involvement.
Automatic completions are suitable for MOOC course that are graded on the scale pass-fail. Course completion can be based on just course exercises, or course exercises and an exam. If your course is graded on the scale 0-5 or want to give the completion manually for some other reason, see this wiki page: Manual completions
You can configure automatic completions in the editor view, on the Modules tab (see image below).
You set completion requirements for each module separately. Each module consist of a number chapters. Most courses consist of only one module that includes all chapters.
Scroll down on the page to find the default module. If your course only has one module (and one course code in Sisu), do not create a new module.
- Starts: First chapter of the module. Make sure default settings are correct.
- Ends: Last chapter of the module. Make sure default settings are correct.
- Course code: Official course code in the syllabus.
- ECTS credits: Number of credits awarded for the course.
- Enable automatic completion: Check this selection if you want to use the automatic completion feature.
- Points threshold: Set the number of points that a student has to receive to pass the course.
- Exercises attempted threshold: Set the number of exercises student has to attempt to pass the course. As long as a student submits any answer, the exercise is consider attempted by the system.
- Requires completing an exam: If you check this box, the student does not receive a completion based on the points threshold and exercises attempted threshold set above. Instead, the student is able to access the course exam if they meet the completion requirements. See separate instruction page for configuring an exam.
- Override completion registration link: Check this selection if you want to manually configure where student is directed from the registration link on the congratulations block that they see when they pass the course. For example, you can direct students to a subpage with further enrollment instructions. If your course is a University of Helsinki course where students enroll through the Open University, you can leave this unchecked.
- Completion registration link: This is only used when override completion registration link is active and students do not register credits though the University of Helsinki Open University. Paste the link (where students who have passed the course should be directed to if they want to register their completion) here.
Remember to confirm the changes you have made with check mark in the bottom right corner of the module settings (see image below)
Finally, save all changes you have made to modules in the separate dialog.
Otherwise students will not know whether they have passed the course or not.
