This page explains what course instances are and when they are useful.
- Each course has at least one course instance (default instance), but can have multiple instances.
- The contents of the course are the same between all course instances, which means that it is not possible to edit just the contents of one course instance.
- Each course instance has an individual points list and completions list. When a student begins to study a course, they must select a course instance. Their progress (points) and completions are stored under that particular instance.
- Permissions to view the points and completion information of a course instance can be managed separately. For example, an administrator from a certain educational institution can be granted the permission to view information related to their institution's course instance only.
- Joint course between multiple educational institutions: If a course is organized in collaboration between multiple organizations, it is possible to create a course instance for each institution. After this, an administrator from each institution can be given the permission to view the points list and completion list of their institution. This way, each administrator will only see information relevant them and their institution.
- MOOC is used on multiple versions of the course: The same MOOC material could be used as stand-alone course worth 2 credits, for example. At the same time another group of students might be studying the MOOC as a part of larger 5 credit course. Course instances can be used to create separate points lists for students taking each version of the course.
