Create an exam and connect it to a course

This page explains how you can create and exam and connect it to your course.

Create a new exam

  1. Log in with a user account with admin level permissions
  2. Go to the organization page your course is on. All organizations are listed on this page.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the list of exams.
  2. Click the Create button.

If you do not see the Create button, it means that you do not have the required permission to create exams in the organization. In such a case, please contact MOOC Center staff.

Fill in exam details

In the dialog that opens when you click the Create button, enter details of the exam.

  • Name: Enter a descriptive name for your exam. Include the name of the course and a reference to the time frame of the exam.
  • Starts at: Enter the date and time when the exam opens to students. Pay attention to setting the time correctly to AM or PM.
  • Ends at: Enter the date and time when the exam closes to students. Pay attention to setting the time correctly to AM or PM.
  • Time in minutes: Set the time the students have to complete the exam once the start their exam attempt. In minutes.
  • Related courses can be completed automatically: Select this option if the course exercises are automatically assessed (multiple choice) and you want students to be able to complete the course by getting enough points from the exam.
  • Minimum points to pass: If you enable automatic completions based on the exam, here you set the minimum number of points the student must receive from the exam to pass the course.
  • Duplicate: Check this option if you want to use a previous exam as the base of your new exam. The exercises and instructions of the old exam will be copied to the new exam. Use the dropdown below this option to select which exam to use as the base for copying.

Go to manage exam view

  1. Find the exam you just created in the list of exam.
  2. Click the manage link

Edit exam, instructions and permissions

In manage exam view, you can click on multiple links to edit your exam

  • Manage page: Link takes to your exam page, you can edit this page like any other content page for your course. Add the exam exercises here. Use slides to set up a random questions. For example, Exercise 1 has Slides 1, 2, 3. Once a student starts an exam attempt, one of these Slides is randomly assigned to the student to answer.
  • Manage permissions: Give admin / editor permissions to anyone who needs to be able to access the manage exam view, for example to edit the exam or export exam points or answers.
  • Edit exam instructions: Edit instructions shown to the student before they start their exam attempt when they go to the exam page. These instructions are also viewable before the exam opens or before the student meets the requirements to attempt the exam (for example does not have enough points).
  • Export points as CSV: Download a CSV file that lists the points each student who has attempted the exam has receive from it.
  • Export submissions as CSV: Download every student's exercise answer submissions as CSV file.

Connect exam to a course (for automatic completions)

  1. Go to the admin view of your course.
  2. Copy the course ID from the address bar of your browser.

  1. In the manage exam view, paste the course ID to the Add course field

  1. Click the Add course button.

Add a link to the exam in your course material

  1. Go to the list of all exams.
  2. Click the name of the exam you just created.

  1. Copy the exam URL from your browsers address bar.

  1. Embed / paste the exam link in your course material so that students can access the exam.
