IT ressources

by Denis Metrailler on 2017-07-12 09:16:31

Hello MATSim community,

I would like to know what type of computer, server or cluster you are using to run your simulations.

We aimed to simulate scenarios with approx 2mios agents. 4 people are going to work on this machine. Currently we are sharing a server with other departments but this solution is not perfect.

It would help us, if you could provide us a quick overview of you IT ressources. Is someone using cloud computing (AWS, ...)?

At VSP (TU Berlin) we are using laptops (and 1% samples) for experimentation, and servers with, say, 96GByte RAM, and about 8 cores for production runs.  We have about a handful of such servers.  Some people have experience with AWS but that wasn't me.  I seem to recall that these experiences in general were positive.  The situation in Germany is (or at least was in the past) that computers count as "infrastructure" while cloud computing counts as "consumption", and research funding for infra is easier to get than funding for consumption.
