GSIP 168 - Remove beta releases

Overview

Proposed By

Andrea Aime

Assigned to Release

This proposal is for GeoServer 2.13.

State

  • Under Discussion

  • Deferred

Motivation

The current release procedure requires us to cut a beta release and have a freeze of the developer branch for a couple of weeks, until the RC is released, to focus developer attentions on bug fixes. However, practice has shown that users are not testing the beta and reporting bugs, making the freeze an un-necessary complication and the beta being basically equals to the first release candidate. A second release candidate will be issued in case there is enough changes to warrant one, otherwise will be skipped and the final be released one month after the RC.

Proposal

The release process will be amended as follows (modified parts in bold):

Prerelease

  • Month -6: master open for development
  • Month -1: month: release candidate is made on new branch
  • Month 1: (start of month): second release candidate is made, if there are sufficient changes to warrant it.

Release

  • Month 1: initial stable release (aim for one month after the first release candidate)

Backwards Compatibility

No backwards compatibility issues found.
