University of Sofia, Bulgaria

5th-century Athens, Thucydides, and the Thracians

1. Main Goals of the Course

This course is intended for 2nd-year Archaeology students with elementary knowledge of Ancient Greek, as well as for MA students in Classics with basic competences in EpiDoc XML.

Its goal is to analyse existing materials and publications, both on-line and in printed form, and to create new digital materials concerning the links between Thucydides' Athens and ancient Thrace.

Course activities are intended to build skills for using and creating digital material while researching topics in the ancient history of the Balkans. They are also meant to produce results not only useful for future learning and research but also interesting as a reflection of the lesser-known Bulgarian scholarly tradition in the subject.

2.Course activities

  • Identifying quotes by Thucydides in the digital Encyclopaedia of Ancient Thrace by the Bulgarian academy of Sciences (see Resources). The passages are then read and analysed in Greek using Perseus, together with the translations and commentaries. A small reader will be created in basic XML with the passages in the original Greek as well as their English and Bulgarian translations. The material will be supplemented with passages the printed reader for Thracian history currently used for teaching in all the disciplines at the Historical Faculty of the University of Sofia.

  • Creating a Google Map of the (identified) Thracian places mentioned in Thucydides using geospace names and coordinates from Pleiades.

  • Finding 5th-century Thracian objects, artefacts, coins, etc. in the on-line database of the Institute for Art Studies to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and eventually linking them to the Thracian places on the map.

  • Marking up inscriptions in EpiDoc XML concerning the external policy of Athens during the Periclean era and the Peloponnesian wars.
