Backups on AWS
“Backups” mean the data in the system, and does not include the files that members upload. We can back those up separately and less frequently. It does include files uploaded by SHF admins.
Financial info must be kept for 10 years
SHF Board reviewed and approved the schedule and how long information must be kept on the Google Doc "Frågor från utvecklarna av hemsidan" ("Questions from the website developers") 2021-04-12. (Owner of that document is @thesuss)

@thesuss: Perhaps put on Loopia instead of a monthly charging place?

Should we back up user uploaded files as a courtesy? (See draft schedule below)
backup frequency | how long to keep | AWS storage class | notes |
---|---|---|---|
daily | 2 months | STANDARD IA | Ex: months 1 & 2 |
weekly | - | not needed | |
monthly (backups made on the 1st of each month) | 12 months | Glacier | Ex: months 3 - 15 |
yearly (backups made on 1 January of each year) | all years | Deep Archive |
We would have these backups:
- Every day for the past 2 months: all of March and all of February
- Monthly for the previous 12 months: January 1, 2021 and the first of the month for Dec 2020 (Dec. 1) and backwards to Feb 1, 2020
- Then every January 1 for all years 2020, 2019, 2018, …
- This is a DRAFT
- We assume that users will keep their own original copies of files they upload to SHF.
- We back up the files as a courtesy to users; we do not keep these for disaster recovery or reliability.
backup frequency | how long to keep | AWS storage class | notes |
---|---|---|---|
weekly | 1 month | Deep Archive | backup on the same day of the week (ex: Tuesday?) |
monthly | 3 months | Deep Archive | Ex: months 2 - 4 |
yearly | 2 years | Deep Archive | backup on 1 January |
We would have these backups:
- Every Tuesday in March (= weekly backups)
- Monthly for the previous 3 months: 1 Feb 2021, 1 Jan 2021, 1 Dec 2020
- Then every January 1 for the past 2 years: 1 Jan 2021, 1 Jan 2020
The yearly backup for 1 Jan 2021 will be a duplicate of the monthly 1 Jan 2021 backup. Is this OK?
- It keeps things simple
- How much will it cost?
