Data Collection Protocol (SEAMO)
Data collection experiment
Before the participant arrives
Set up the Perk Tutor work station
1) Prepare the LP Phantom: take the first model, which is a healthy spine model (PH01M01) and fill it with water from the iv. bag. Plug the reference sensor into the whole at the bottom of the model; make sure the marked sides correspond. Place the model into the phantom and apply some gel on the surface of the silicon. Place the cover and a sheet of TegaDerm on the phantom.
2) Open Slicer on the laptop and make sure to plug in the network cable. Load the specific file (.mrml file for PH01M01) into Slicer and change the view into “3D only”.
3) Start the configuration file on the U/S machine. You can find it under Start menu named exactly how the model is named. Adjust the parameters on the U/S machine:
Reject: 10, Gain: 90%, Frequency: 6.6
4) Load the presentation: USGuided LumbarPuncture_v06-VideoInserted.pptx.
When the participant arrives
1) Welcome the participants and ask her to have a seat
2) Have the participant a)read the instruction, b)sign the consent forms in two copies and c)fill out the first page of the questionnaire
3) Start the presentation and answer any questions the participants might have. Remind the participants that no matter in which group she was selected, she will have access only for the U/S guidance during testing.
Training
1) Start the training on the first model. You might need to do hold the phantom in a stable position. The participants have 10 minutes for the first training. It can be finished earlier if the CSF flow occurs and the participant agrees.
2) Change the spine model in the phantom. The second model is: PD01M01. Every time you change the model, you need to restart Slicer, load the specific scene (.mrml file) and run the proper config file on the U/S machine as well.
Don’t forget to fill the phantom with water and leave the valve open.
Remind the participant that this is a very hard case, no need to be stressed and if the needle hit a bony structure pull the needle back, and try in a different direction. Do not force the needle. Again the outcome is getting the CSF Flow.
Testing
After the third model (named: PD02M01) is placed in the phantom properly (remember: water, valve is open, reference sensor – the marks corresponds, slicer is restarted, proper .mrml file is loaded, config file on the U/S machine) you can start the testing. Make sure the EM tracking works.
1) click on R button (recording)
2) Module Node: Create New
3) Transform selection: Probe and Stylus (both!)
4) Click on Start, when the participant grab the U/S probe
5) Do not give any help or instruction to the participant!
6) When CSF is detected, click on Stop
7) To save the data: click on Select LogFile, and name it : subject#, the location where you need to save it: perklab/data/2013_SEAMO/name
As Slicer sometimes freezes, it is a good idea to write down the metrics on the back of the questionnaire before you click on Select LogFile.
After Testing
1) Have the participant fill out the second page of the questionnaire. If she was selected in the U/S group, show her how the 3d model guidance works.
2) Thank the participant and say good-by.
