Set DCs to Draft, Free, and Core

In the Challenges section of the admin, DCs have three flags that control which users will see the DC and where.

Draft

DCs that are marked as Draft will have a URL you can use as a direct link, but they won't be visible to users from the Challenges page.

Use Draft when you want to

  • add a new DC and view it on the site before publishing
  • share in progress DCs with the team or partners for feedback
  • create a DC that you want a direct link for, but don't want it to show up on the Challenges page

Free

Free DCs are accessible to all users, whether or not they are in a membership. If a DC is marked as Free, all logged in users will have access to:

  • the DC Inspiration page
  • all EDP pages
  • the Guide with Instructional and Content Videos
  • Educator Resources for the DC (Educators, Parents)
  • post progress in the EDP (Students)

Example: we are designating the Boeing DCs as Free through Summer 2017 so that they are open to non-membership accounts

Core

We created the Core challenge type to distinguish between our "5 Free DCs" and other DCs that are marked as Free. Core is an additional flag that you can add to a Free DC.

Core DCs are the small set (currently 5) of "Free DCs" that we are promoting to users as a preview of CM. The list can be added to or changed any time by using this flag.

Example: we are designating the "5 Free DCs" as Free and Core; we're marking the Boeing DCs as only Free

DCs marked as Core will automatically show up in the [Free Challenges filter] (https://www.curiositymachine.org/challenges/?free=1#challenges):

Core DCs will also eventually show up on the Educator dashboard -- will update when that's live.

No Flag Selected

If none of these flags are selected....

  • the DC will be visible on CM through the Challenges page
  • all users will be able to see the DC Inspiration Page
  • users will not be able to access the EDP or the Guide unless the DC is part of their membership

Pro Tips

Change the flags for multiple DCs at one by selecting DCs and using the Action dropdown menu on the Challenges admin page:
