Core Lightning JSON-RPC client for Clojure.

Dependency

com.tonyaldon/cln.rpc {:mvn/version "24.05"}

Usage

There is two ways to do RPC calls to lightningd:

  1. The call function (works for any methods),
  2. Functions with the same names of ligthningd builtin methods.

For instance, we can send a getinfo request to lightningd in two ways:

;; (require '[clnrpc-clj :as rpc]) ;; for version v23.11 or v24.02
(require '[tonyaldon.cln.rpc :as rpc])

;; We assume we have a node running on regtest
(def rpc-info
  {:socket-file "/tmp/l1-regtest/regtest/lightning-rpc"})

(rpc/call rpc-info "getinfo")
;; {:address [], :color "022ac7", :our_features {:init "080000000000000000000000000008a0882a0a69a2", :node "080000000000000000000000000088a0882a0a69a2", :channel "", :invoice "02000022024100"}, :num_active_channels 0, :num_inactive_channels 0, :lightning-dir "/tmp/l1-regtest/regtest", :binding [{:type "ipv4", :address "127.0.0.1", :port 7171}], :alias "SLEEPYWATER-v23.11", :num_peers 0, :id "022ac71e28c8004f72e576ef0b2998b29cce3a89cab351b7d6f10bd7ea0f61eec8", :num_pending_channels 0, :network "regtest", :version "v23.11", :blockheight 1, :fees_collected_msat 0}

(rpc/getinfo rpc-info)
;; {:address [], :color "022ac7", :our_features {:init "080000000000000000000000000008a0882a0a69a2", :node "080000000000000000000000000088a0882a0a69a2", :channel "", :invoice "02000022024100"}, :num_active_channels 0, :num_inactive_channels 0, :lightning-dir "/tmp/l1-regtest/regtest", :binding [{:type "ipv4", :address "127.0.0.1", :port 7171}], :alias "SLEEPYWATER-v23.11", :num_peers 0, :id "022ac71e28c8004f72e576ef0b2998b29cce3a89cab351b7d6f10bd7ea0f61eec8", :num_pending_channels 0, :network "regtest", :version "v23.11", :blockheight 1, :fees_collected_msat 0}

And in the case the method takes arguments, like the invoice method for instance, we can do this:

;; (require '[clnrpc-clj :as rpc]) ;; for version v23.11 or v24.02
(require '[tonyaldon.cln.rpc :as rpc])

;; We assume we have a node running on regtest
(def rpc-info
  {:socket-file "/tmp/l1-regtest/regtest/lightning-rpc"})

(let [params {:amount_msat 10000
              :label (str "label-" (rand))
              :description "description"}]
  (rpc/call rpc-info "invoice" params))
;; {:payment_hash "c5bfb990f2e9fb8dca4c883d469e4806979aaa2e34ed6030c42f64d1700caa27", :expires_at 1708428050, :bolt11 "lnbcrt100n1pjuk5yjsp53kc9yq0dy92rag2r5la5fjd886s66f8el3ndf7fw8mlg6ch0sl8spp5cklmny8ja8acmjjv3q75d8jgq6te423wxnkkqvxy9ajdzuqv4gnsdqjv3jhxcmjd9c8g6t0dcxqyjw5qcqp2fp4pjugnryr2hy4a2n09qphyu8ukw69nz6yesn7msvtc9xm22nh2zzaq9qx3qysgqxslpxhekuw8gf5r6pq5h0caflqzv4cmve46wp9axspzrglq89nzxdrju8lr9yxah6p7mlckrd3u6cy6qq00e7vsm3lwyuk0ljuyex0cpqd4ak9", :payment_secret "8db05201ed21543ea143a7fb44c9a73ea1ad24f9fc66d4f92e3efe8d62ef87cf", :created_index 4, :warning_capacity "Insufficient incoming channel capacity to pay invoice"}

(rpc/invoice rpc-info

     :bolt11
     (rpc/decode rpc-info)
     (#(select-keys % [:expiry :min_final_cltv_expiry])))
;; {:expiry 3600, :min_final_cltv_expiry 8}

Note that not all the builtin lightningd methods are defined. Indeed, they are generated from the files in CLN doc/schemas directory and not all the builtin methods have a corresponding schema file.

To see more details, check tonyaldon.cln.rpc/call docstring.

Generate CLN RPC methods from CLN schemas directory

The directory doc/schemas of CLN contains JSON schemas describing almost all the builtin methods. We use it to generate the functions in the namespace tonyaldon.cln.rpc with the same name of the builtin methods.

To do so, run:

$ make rpcmethods

Tests

You can run all the tests with:

$ poetry shell
$ poetry install
$ make test

To install poetry, see https://python-poetry.org.

Note that you only need to enter in the poetry shell (and install the Python dependencies) once.

To test cln.rpc against Core Lightning using pyln-testing library, run the following:

$ poetry shell
$ poetry install
$ make pytest

Again, poetry instructions are just issued once.

To test Clojure (no interaction with Core Lightning), run the following:

$ make cljtest
