#Rust for Linux

Our goal [Rust for Linux](https://rust-for-linux.com) is to add support for the Rust language to the Linux kernel in order to improve the security and reliability of billions of devices and computer systems that use the Linux kernel around the world. This will likely be achieved by merging the first Rust production drivers into the Linux kernel, though the timeline for doing so will be determined by the community and its contributions.


**November Highlights**

- The [Linux v6.13 Rust
PR](https://lore.kernel.org/all/[email protected]/)
has been prepared and submitted, containing the work from a multitude
of developers and companies, to support the first Rust users that have
already landed in Linux (Asix PHY driver, AMCC QT2025 PHY driver, Null
Block driver, DRM panic screen QR code generator).

- Other PRs targeting v6.13 are also landing through their
respective subsystems (such as vfs file, vfs pid_namespace,
tracepoints, netdev...): an increasing number of kernel
subsystems/maintainers are getting involved with Rust.

- A third [`rust-fixes` PR for
v6.12](https://lore.kernel.org/rust-for-linux/[email protected]/)
was submitted and landed.

- The resolution of a [libclang/bindgen
double-issue](https://lore.kernel.org/rust-for-linux/[email protected]/)
that the kernel was hitting showcased the ongoing collaboration
between key distributions such as Debian and Fedora and Rust for
Linux.

- Prepared and discussed with upstream Rust the list of [unstable
features](https://rust-for-linux.com/unstable-features) to be
discussed/proposed for 2025H1 Rust project goals. While the particular
items are not decided yet, it is likely that upstream Rust will have
the Linux kernel as part of their project goals again, which is key to
eventually get the kernel into stable Rust.

- Plus many other minor maintenance tasks and activities, such as
the usual meetings (weekly, core, Rust project, Linux Technical
Advisory Board...), reviewing/acking/testing patches, submitting
fixes/cleanups, handling lists and issues, stable/LTS kernels
maintenance, liaison/discussions with related projects, maintaining
the website, creating "good first issues", etc.
