A Collection of Linux drivers for the Razer Chroma devices, providing a daemon and graphical frontends.

Execute installation script:
cd razer_blackwidow_chroma_driver ./install_driver_debian.sh

Reboot
You can either install using the above Debian method or with the packaged method, which provides some benefits.

Install the packages needed to build the software:
sudo apt-get install -y dpkg-dev libdbus-1-dev jq libsdl2-dev libsdl2-image-dev libfftw3-dev

Build the software and driver:
make

Build the package:
./package_for_ubuntu.sh OR ./package_for_debian.sh

The command above will output something like
dpkg-name: info: moved 'tmp.3PnAtckx3o.deb' to '/tmp/razer-chroma-driver_1.0.0_amd64.deb'
. To install the newly created package:sudo dpkg -i /tmp/razer-chroma-driver_1.0.0_amd64.deb

(Optional) If you wish, you can clean source directory:
make clean
Installing the .deb
file has multiple benefits:
- Keeps track of all the installed files.
- Simplifies the removal of the driver and daemon later.
- Registers with DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) - this recompiles the driver whenever a new kernel is installed.
For upstart distros (such as Ubuntu 14.10 and prior), an upstart style init script is provided.
There is log file for upstart jobs under /var/log/upstart
so you can view startup issues with tail /var/log/upstart/razer_bcd.log
.
For systemd distros (such as Debian as well as Ubuntu 15.04 and later), a script is also provided.
To remove the driver/daemon:
sudo dpkg -r razer-chroma-driver
To manage upstart jobs:
sudo status razer_bcd
sudo start razer_bcd
sudo stop razer_bcd
sudo restart razer_bcd
On Ubuntu, you can use sudo service razer_bcd
ACTION

is start|stop|status|restart
On Debian, you can control the driver with /etc/init.d/razer_bcd

or using systemctl
which is the preferred method (providing systemd is installed).

Install dependencies (libdbus-1-dev,jq)

To uninstall run
sudo make uninstall
When you'd like to update when new changes are made to the project, update your copy of the repository and follow the installation procedures again.
cd /path/to/razer_blackwidow_chroma_driver
git pull
This is a simple GUI that sits in the notification tray. Clicking on this reveals a context menu allowing you to change some basic features of the daemon/driver such as effects, brightness and toggling some functions, including changing the base colour. It'll be expanded to allow for custom effect creation eventually.
The application is at /usr/share/razer_tray_applet/razer_tray_applet.py
and also has a .desktop
entry to start from the Applications menu or at login.
This is a graphical frontend which interacts with the daemon/driver allowing easy configuration of the keyboard's features, including the creation of key profiles.
Custom animation effects are not yet supported.
The application is at /usr/share/razer_chroma_controller/chroma_controller.py
and also has a .desktop
entry, so it appears in the Applications menu.
Have a look at the scripts directory. In the driver sub directory you will find the scripts to start the builtin keyboard effects.
- Changing effect example
:: the following command will create a render node for the effect with the unique id: 8 [fx_uid,name,description] ::

And take a look at the daemon and tests sub directories in scripts. The daemon uses dbus as its IPC mechanism, so you are not bound to shell scripts (someone may even write a Gui to control the daemon , maybe like the node editor in blender)
In the file /usr/share/razer_bcd/bash_keyboard_functions.sh
there are some functions used before and after the daemon is started/stopped. These functions bind and unbind the chroma to the kernel
driver. You can source the file and then run bind_all
, this will attempt to bind chromas and skip any already binded. There is also a function called unbind_all
which as you would
of guessed unbinds all chroma keyboards.

How to create a standalone effect easily using the included library ?
First of all we need an idea what the effect shall do.
In this example i just setup the keyboard for a dota profile
First we need to setup the library:

To create an custom keyboard led layout we need to tell the library to activate the custom mode:
razer_set_custom_mode(chroma);
If the keyboard was using the custom mode before the keys are still lit with the last color settings ,so let us clear it:
razer_clear_all(chroma->keys);
To actually update the keyboard leds we need to razer_update (using the integrated keyboard led frame/keys struct):
razer_update_keys(chroma,chroma->keys);
So now that we got a black keyboard we want to light some keys in different colors

Dont forget to update the keyboard with the new led color values:

Freeing the library is just as easy:

To compile just type:
gcc -std=c99 dota_keys.c -lrazer_chroma -lm -o dota_keys
After executing it you should now have a dota profile lighting up your keyboard.(dont forget to sudo) This is just a simple example using a ascii helper,if your profile needs to color function keys ,etc you can set the key colors by manually setting the pos.

How to create an effect to be used in the daemon ? Why not shoot for something crazy like a light blast originating from keys being pressed this time? Its not that much different than writing a self-hosted effect.
