This project is a web-based food ordering system with integrated Splitwise support. It allows users to place food orders, calculate the total cost, and seamlessly split the expenses with friends or colleagues using Splitwise. The system simplifies group food orders and expense management, making it ideal for office teams, friends, or any group of people ordering food together.
I've created this cool mobile web app as a side project, mainly for smartphones. It all started because my roommates and I often order food from a particular restaurant, and it was becoming a real pain to keep track of our orders.
We initially tried using a WhatsApp group, but it was messy and didn't work well. So, I decided to build this web app to make our lives easier. It's all about creating a smooth and hassle-free way to make food orders together.
With the app, we can easily make a list of what each of us wants to order. Once we've got our order together, we can quickly place it with services like PickMe. And the best part is the app also links up with Splitwise, automatically splitting the bill between us. It's a real time-saver!
Before you begin, make sure you have the following:
- MongoDB Cloud Account: You need to register for a MongoDB Cloud account and obtain your MongoDB connection URL.
Follow these step-by-step instructions to obtain an API key from your Splitwise account:
-
Create a Splitwise Account (if you don't have one):
- If you don't already have a Splitwise account, go to the Splitwise website and sign up for a new account.
-
Log In to Your Splitwise Account:
- After creating your account, log in to your Splitwise account using your credentials.
-
Visit the Splitwise Developers Page:
- Once you're logged in, open a new browser tab and go to the Splitwise Developers page.
-
Create a New Application:
- On the Developers page, you'll see a button that says "Register your application." Click on it.
-
Fill in Application Details:
- You'll need to provide some details about your application:
- Application name: Give your application a name.
- Application description: Give your application a description.
- Homepage URL: You can enter a website URL associated with your project.
- Callback URL: Leave this field blank for now; it's not required for obtaining an API key.
- You'll need to provide some details about your application:
-
Agree to Terms and Conditions:
- Read and agree to the terms and conditions for using the Splitwise API by checking the box.
-
Submit Application:
- Click the "Register your application" button to submit your application details.
-
API Key Generation:
- After you've created the application, copy the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret.
CONSUMER_KEY
CONSUMER_SECRET
That's it! You now have your Splitwise API key, which you can use to authenticate and make requests to the Splitwise API for your project. Make sure to store it securely and follow best practices for API key management to protect your application and user data.
-
Splitwise Group ID: Create a Splitwise group and obtain the group ID. It can be get by navigating to your group page in browser. In the url you can see the group ID. Set it as
GROUP_ID
in your environment variables. -
User Access: Define the user ID of the person who has the main access to the system as
FROM
. -
Environment Variables: Create a
.env
file in the project directory and set the following variables:
For Server
MONGO_URL=YOUR_MONGODB_CONNECTION_URL
CONSUMER_KEY=YOUR_SPLITWISE_CONSUMER_KEY
CONSUMER_SECRET=YOUR_SPLITWISE_CONSUMER_SECRET
GROUP_ID=YOUR_SPLITWISE_GROUP_ID
FROM=YOUR_USER_ID
For Client
REACT_APP_API_URL=http://localhost:5000
