Where does the iterative feature selection approach originate from?

I've taken a look at the iterative feature selection method and I've noticed it's quite an intuitive approach that makes significant differences in generating the low dim embeddings. I was wondering if this is novel or is it inspired by a paper you came across?

I imagine that perhaps over clustering using a resolution like 4.0 and then performing cluster merging algorithms like Cytocipher/CHOIR (but for scATAC-seq) could potentially enhance the results here. This is an alternative to just selecting a resolution of 1.0.
