Air pollution is the fourth most significant global risk factor for human health. Despite decreasing levels, air pollution continues to pose a substantial burden on health and the economy. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of temporal and spatial trends in PM2.5 and ozone concentrations, with a focus on Latin American and Caribbean countries, from 1990 to 2019. We specifically emphasize ambient PM2.5 (aPM2.5) concentrations due to their greater impact on health. We gathered data from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study, including disability-adjusted life years (DALY) for general health, as well as years lost to ischemic heart disease (IHD), stroke, and DALY specific to tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer. Additionally, we collected years of life lost (YLL) and mortality attributable to air pollution for 43 European countries between 1990 and 2019. Concentrations of ambient particulate matter (aPM2.5), ozone, and household air pollution from solid fuels were sourced from the 2020 State of Global Air. We analyzed changes in air pollution parameters, along with DALY, YLL, and mortality related to air pollution, considering gross national income (GNI) and the sociodemographic index (SDI). Using an innovative calculation, we employed changes in the aPM2.5 ratio (PMR) and DALY rate ratio (DARR) to assess each country's ability to reduce its aPM2.5 pollution and DALYs at least to the extent of the European median decrease within the analyzed period. Additionally, we compared these metrics from the region with global and European statistics. We attempted to replicate the studies conducted by Juginović et al.,2021 and Shaowei Sang et al., 2022, comparing the results obtained in Latin America and the Caribbean with those from Europe and globally.
