Ice Pick

A Python library that allows easy access to AWS billing data collected by the Netflix OSS Ice tool, as well as manipulation of the configured Application Groups.

Installation

pip install ice_pick

Getting Started

Using ice_pick is simple. Once you have an instance of the Netflix OSS Ice application configured for your AWS account, you can just import the APIRequest, point to your Ice url, and start querying.

Getting the Summary Table Data

from ice_pick.api import APIRequest

ice_url = 'http://example.com/ice/'  # URL to your Ice instance
api_request = APIRequest(ice_url)
data = api_request.get_data()

print data

{
    'data': {
        'AWS Data Pipeline': [0.25148882999999966],
        'Alexa Web Information Service': [0.11130000000000001],

By default ice-pick uses the following filters:

{
    'aggregate': 'data',
    'breakdown': True,
    'consolidate': 'monthly',
    'end': '2014-02-25 08PM',
    'factorsps': False,
    'groupBy': 'Product',
    'isCost': True,
    'showsps': False,
    'start': '2014-02-01 12AM'
}

The start and end dates are based on current (UTC) time by default.

Filtering by Products

from ice_pick.filters import products as _products
products = [_products.EC2, _products.EC2_INSTANCE]
api_request.set_products(products)
data = api_request.get_data()

print data

{
    'data': {
        'aggregated': [27643.726958229963],

        }
    },
    'status': 200,
    'time': [1391212800000]
}

Filtering by Regions

from ice_pick.filters import regions as _regions
regions = [_regions.US_WEST_1, _regions.US_WEST_2]
api_request.set_products(regions)
data = api_request.get_data()

More Filters

# Filtering by date time
import datetime
start = datetime.datetime(2014, 01, 01)
end = datetime.datetime.now()

api_request.set_start(start)
api_request.set_end(start)

# Filtering by Usage Type
from ice_pick.filters import usage_types as _usage_types
usage_types = [_usage_types.LOAD_BALANCER_USAGE, _usage_types.M1_XLARGE]

api_request.set_usage_types(usage_types)

Initializing And Overriding Default Filtering

You can pass all the filters you want to apply at the moment you initialize the APIRequest.

from ice_pick.filters import consolidate as _consolidate
from ice_pick.filters import group_by as _group_by
from ice_pick.filters import operations as _operations

filters = {
    APIFilters.ACCOUNTS: ['012345678900', '009876543210'],
    APIFilters.REGIONS: [_regions.US_WEST_1, _regions.US_WEST_2],
    APIFilters.BREAKDOWN: True,
    APIFilters.CONSOLIDATE: _consolidate.MONTHLY,
    APIFilters.FACTOR_SPS: False,
    APIFilters.GROUP_BY: _group_by.PRODUCT,
    APIFilters.IS_COST: True,
    APIFilters.OPERATIONS: [_operations.CREATE_BUCKET, _operations.CREATE_SNAPSHOT],
    APIFilters.SHOW_SPS: False,
    APIFilters.USAGE_TYPES: USAGE_TYPES
    .
    .
    .
}

api_request = APIRequest(ice_url, **filters)

Getting The Current Filters

You can check which filters were active on the last request, and which filters will be used for the next request.

api_request.get_filters()

Using HTTP Request Authentication

If your Ice installation is behind HTTP authentication (i.e. being served by a proxy with HTTP authentication enabled), you can use any form of authentication that is supported by the requests library; simply call the set_http_auth() method with the same parameter that needs to be passed to the requests object.

HTTP Basic authentication:

from ice_pick.api import APIRequest

ice_url = 'http://example.com/ice/'  # URL to your Ice instance
api_request = APIRequest(ice_url)
api_request.set_http_auth(('myuser', 'mypass'))
data = api_request.get_data()

HTTP Digest authentication:

from ice_pick.api import APIRequest
from requests.auth import HTTPDigestAuth

ice_url = 'http://example.com/ice/'  # URL to your Ice instance
api_request = APIRequest(ice_url)
api_request.set_http_auth(HTTPDigestAuth('user', 'pass'))
data = api_request.get_data()

Working With Application Groups

ice_pick now includes a Groups class to query and manipulate Application Groups and related data. This is useful if you have ice.customTags set in ice.properties and want to automatically create Application Groups for them.

Query Accounts, Products and Resource Groups

>>> from pprint import pprint
>>> from ice_pick.groups import Groups
>>> g = Groups('http://ice.example.com/')
>>> accounts = g.get_account_names()
>>> pprint(accounts)
[u'123456789012', u'987654321098']
>>> regions = g.get_regions_for_account(accounts)
>>> pprint(regions)
[u'ap-northeast-1',
 u'ap-southeast-1',
 u'ap-southeast-2',
 u'eu-west-1',
 u'sa-east-1',
 u'us-east-1',
 u'us-west-1',
 u'us-west-2']
>>> products = g.get_products(accounts, regions)
>>> pprint(products)
[u'ebs',
 u'ec2',
 u'ec2_instance',
 u'rds',
 u's3']
>>> resource_groups = g.get_all_resource_groups(accounts, regions, products)
>>> pprint(resource_groups)
[u'SomeService/Foo_Prod',
 u'SomeService/Foo_Test',
 u'SomeService/Foo_Unknown',
 u'SomeService/Bar_Dev',
 u'SomeService/Bar_Prod',
 u'SomeService/Bar_Test',
 u'SomeService/Baz_Dev',
 u'SomeService/Baz_Prod',
 u'SomeService/Baz_Test',
 u'ebs',
 u'ec2',
 u'ec2_instance',

>>> rg_lists = g.get_resource_group_lists()
>>> pprint(rg_lists)

 u'sws': [],
 u'vpc': []}
>>> app_groups = g.get_application_group_names()
>>> pprint(app_groups)
[u'SomeService',
 u'Foobar',
 u'AMIs']

Query an Existing Application Group

>>> from pprint import pprint
>>> from ice_pick.groups import Groups
>>> g = Groups('http://ice.example.com/')
>>> grp = g.get_application_group('Foobar')
>>> pprint(grp)
{'name': u'Foobar',
 'owner': u'[email protected]',
 'products': {u'ec2': [u'someapp', u'someapp_Prod', u'someapp_Test'],
              u'ec2_instance': [u'someapp'],
              u'rds': [u'someapp', u'someapp_Prod', u'someapp_Test'],
              u's3': [u'someapp_Prod']}}

Create or Update an Application Group

Application group of all untagged resources:

>>> from pprint import pprint
>>> from ice_pick.groups import Groups
>>> g = Groups('http://ice.example.com/')
>>> rg_lists = g.get_resource_group_lists()
>>>
>>> untagged = {}
>>> for product in rg_lists:
...     for rg in rg_lists[product]:
...         if product == rg:
...             untagged[product] = [rg]
...
>>> pprint(untagged)
{u'cloudfront': [u'cloudfront'],
 u'cloudwatch': [u'cloudwatch'],
 u'ebs': [u'ebs'],
 u'ec2': [u'ec2'],
 u'ec2_instance': [u'ec2_instance'],
 u'elasticache': [u'elasticache'],
 u'rds': [u'rds'],
 u'route53': [u'route53'],
 u's3': [u's3']}
>>> g.set_application_group('Untagged', untagged, '[email protected]')
{}

Application group for all Resource Groups (tags) starting with 'SomeService':

>>> from collections import defaultdict
>>> from pprint import pprint
>>> from ice_pick.groups import Groups
>>> g = Groups('http://ice.example.com/')
>>> rg_lists = g.get_resource_group_lists()
>>>
>>> SomeService = defaultdict(list)
