Hey everyone! Got some news to share about VxKex.
Great news first - vxiiduu (the real creator of VxKex) dropped a fresh update on Discord on October 10th! Just found out about this recently, which is why this update is a bit late. The update brings some great improvements:
VERSION 1.1.2.1428
- Fixed a race condition which affects Chromium and Electron-based
applications.
- Fixed a propagation bug which caused VxKex to not be able to run on
32-bit operating systems.
- Fixed an issue where a non-standard %Path% environment variable could
cause VxKex to fail to start for all programs.
- Added support for applications:
- Life is Strange: True Colors
I've personally tested a couple things with this version:
- Life is Strange: True Colors runs great without the starting error!
VxKex 1.1.1.1375 (Fatal Error appears after starting the game)
VxKex 1.1.2.1428 (No more error)
- The Windows 7 32-bit fix works now - the previous version (1.1.1.1375) was broken on updated Windows 7 32-bit systems, but this version is working fine.
Now for the not-so-great stuff. There's a situation with GitHub that you should know about. After vxiiduu deleted his GitHub account due to personal reasons, someone grabbed their old username (GitHub frees up usernames 90 days after deletion) and made another fake VxKex repo. This isn't the first time someone has pretended to be vxiiduu. I suspect it's likely the same impersonator as last time.
Here's the current situation:
- Right now they're hosting the same files as the original releases (checked the hashes myself)
- BUT they've added some sketchy stuff like a fake vxiiduu mom sob story and Bitcoin donation address
- The problem is they could swap in malicious files anytime
- Even worse, all prior VxKex files (EXE/DLL/shell extension) still point to that repo since it used to be the real one
What I've done:
- Replaced all mentions of
https://github.com/vxiiduu/VxKex/ (FAKE)from this release's files withhttps://github.com/i486/VxKex/ (THIS REPO) - Working on cleaning those references from the source files
- Submitted an impersonation report to GitHub regarding the fake repo and suggest you do the same.

Original Release Note:
This release of VxKex is primarily a bug-fix release intended to improve compatibility with Electron applications which display JavaScript errors upon startup, or complain about "uv_os_gethostname". The affected applications include VSCode (and VSCodium) and Signal. Other minor fixes are listed in the change log below.
The installers for this release (and future releases) work for both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.

- Fixed a bug where some command-line applications would not show any
output.
- Fixed a bug where a mixture of forward slashes and backslashes in the
%Path% environment variable could cause VxKex to fail to start for
some programs. Autodesk Maya is known to cause this situation.
- Fix an issue where Windows may display a "This program might not have
installed correctly" dialog after exiting the installer.
- Fix an issue where a 32-bit application starting a Chromium process
could cause it to enter an endless loop/application hang.
- The installer now displays a warning if the recommended updates
are not installed on the system.

Original Release Note:
This release is a feature upgrade which adds support for the latest versions of Chromium, Opera, Firefox, and some Electron-based applications. The support for Qt6 applications has been improved slightly, and a small number of additional applications have received support. Calibre support is now complete (allows properly reading e-books).
The installers for this release (and future releases) work for both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.

- Changed VxKex architecture from IFEO Debugger to IFEO VerifierDlls.
This removes many bugs and deficiencies of the previous architecture.
- MSI installers are now supported.
- VxKex now bypasses the "... is not a valid Win32 application" error
which can be caused by a version check before programs run.
- Administrator permissions are no longer required to configure most
settings.
- Add support for many more applications. See the application
compatibility list for a full overview.
- IFEO filter is now used. This prevents applications with the same
.exe name conflicting.
- Added support for the majority of Qt6 applications.
- Work around font kerning issues in QBittorrent.
- The installer now disables VxKex for programs when uninstalling.
- Global configuration GUI has been added.
- Debug logging has been significantly improved with the introduction
of the .vxl file format and VxlView application.
This time the 32 bit setups are not included because they probably don't work (have never been tested). You can still run 32 bit applications on a 64 bit computer/OS under VxKex.
