Roadmap
The following are some tasks that will need to be performed next in this project.
The order in which they are listed is irrelevant.
The work is in progress on this branch: (ck3mbp) https://github.com/hmlendea/more-cultural-names/tree/ck3mbp
Many names, especially most of the greek and arabian ones, lack diacritics.
They need to be added.
Many russian names have been reported to be incorrect due to the transliteration process.
As a result, all russian names will need to be reviewed and replaced where necessary.
A considerable chunk of the covered locations have already got the "Wikidata treatment", however this process needs to continue, and it will take a while until it is complete.
Wikidata holds a huge amount of alternative place names. A script to extract those (for any given location) has already been developed.
- Note 1: Almost all of the names on Wikidata are modern variants.
- Note 2: They still need to be reviewed and not just added blindly.
Most of the location IDs are not ok. They don't conform to a common standard and most of them are not informative enough in their current form.
They need to be renamed in the following name:
- Use underscores instead of spaces
- Use only english names/words if available, otherwise the native language of the country that currently holds that location today
- Make sure they are distinctive and informative enough, and provide enough information to easily identify the place just by reading the ID
The reason why they are so messed up currently is that the IDs right now are simply copy-pastes of the internal game IDs of those locations.
- Remove hardcoded "fallback" names
- The fallback links in languages.xml should be the only fallbacks we have
- For example, many UK locations have irish names for welsh/breton/cornish/etc - that's not ok
There are some duplicated entries there.
This happened because the same location had different game IDs in e.g. CK2 compared to CK3, so the import script didn't match them as being the same thing.
There are names in certain that fallback to those of other languages. This is fine when it happens through the automatic process that uses the fallback links in languages.xml, but it is not ok when the names are explicitly defined in locations.xml as "normal" names.
Some of the offenders:
- Many UK locations use Irish names for Welsh/Breton/Cornish/etc...
- Many locations use German names for Thuringian/Bavarian/etc
languages.xml should only contain explicit names that we know to be valid for the languages that they are defined for.
Some names are defined as medieval when in fact they are modern, or vice versa.
This is not a problem currently since all the supported games use old names anyway (excepting HOI4 which is WIP and will have problems when finished, if we don't solve this issue)
E.g. many modern german names are defined as German_Middle_High, which is wrong
Most have been removed. However, there are still a few left.
The goal is to, if possible, remove Serbial_Medieval and Croatian_Medieval alltogether, and only leave SerboCroatian_Medieval (or preferably just use Slavonic_Church_Old).
If possible it'd be good to also remove Serbian and Croatian and only leave SerboCroatian. If that is not possible however, their use should be kept at a minumum (e.g. only when they differ).
The Czech and the Slovak languages only started to show noticeable differences after the medieval period.
So, since the medieval names should be the same for those languages, it is redundant to have them duplicated for both versions. In this mod, we should replace them with a new common language variant: Czechoslovak(ian)_Medieval
Add more language fallbacks where it makes sense Remove language fallbacks where it doesn't make sense
Suggestions are welcome and very much appreciated
