Frame 3D Printing
The HEROSwarm V2 frame is designed for 3D printing. The .stl files are available in this repository and the new PCB-based chassis will be open-sourced once it is completed. There are 5 unique parts that make up the Swarm chassis:
Part | Quantity |
---|---|
Motor Mount | 1 |
Powerboost and SBC Mount | 2 |
Feather Sense Mount | 1 |
Short Pillars | 4 |
Long Pillars | 4 |
Motor Cap | 2 |
You should download the files and import them into a slicer depending on the printer you want to use. For single robots, the Creality printer in the lab will suffice, you will need can get the installer for the Creality Slicer here. If multiple Swarmbots are being made contact the Fabrication Lab at Driftmier to use their printers.
** Slicing the Parts Import the parts to the Creality Slicer and arrange them so that they fit on the build plate, you might have to do multiple prints. A .15 mm layer height and 10% infill will suffice for these parts. Slice the parts to get the amount of time and filament needed to print the parts. Save the part to the SD Card in the 3D printer using a name you will remember.
Setting up the 3D printer If you are using the lab printer, the first step is to get the 3D printer ready. Check the filament spool to make sure there is enough to complete the print based on the estimate from the slicer, and apply glue to the bed to promote part adhesion. Insert the SD card with the slicer files, navigate the file system to find the Swarm Body files, and start printing. The printer will heat up and start printing. Watch the first layer to make sure the parts are printing correctly. When all the parts are printed remove the bed and wash it so that the glue build-up does affect future prints.
