v2.0.0-beta.0

This beta release of version 2.0.0 addresses a design issue present in schema version 1.2.0. The resolution, describe further in PR 42, is backwards-incompatible.

This release also incorporates new additions that had been staged for version 1.3.0, which is now folded into the 2.0.0 release milestone.

The 2.0.0 release will not be posted before two weeks from now (2024-07-05).
