BAAE - Elective modules -Introduction to geospatial analysis with Python

Introduction to geospatial analysis with Python. This course will introduce the main concepts of geospatial data analysis. Student will learn to acquire and interpret satellite imagery and extract important geospatial data using Python programming language. This course is suitable for all levels, but basic knowledge of Python is desirable.

This course consists of 3 parts:

  • Introduction to geographic information systems (Friday, lecture)
  • Python for GIS: working with objects and shapefiles (Friday, practical)
  • Python for GIS: working with satellite imagery (Monday, lecture + practical)
  • ML for GIS applications (Wednesday, lecture + practical)

The following notebooks are provided.

Day 1. During day one of our course, we go through the basic terms of geospatial analysis, like shapefile, raster and vector data, projections, types of satellites energy sources.

  • Python tutorial Open In Colab

  • Working with shapefiles Open In Colab

  • Working with raster images Open In Colab

  • GDAL library introduction Open In Colab

  • a bit more on GDAL Open In Colab

Day 2. During day two of our course, we will go deeper into the types of satellite imagery analysis. In our lecture, we will go through the SDGs and try to undertand how satellite imagery can help inform our decisions in various businesses and help to make them more sustainable. During the practical, we will further explore working with raster data.

  • Working with staellite imagery: rasterio Open In Colab

  • Masking and clipping Open In Colab

  • Raster boundaries Open In Colab

  • Clustering Open In Colab

  • Random forests Open In Colab
