Allora Indexer

Overview

This project serves as a data pump for the Allora Network blockchain. It extracts and stores blockchain data into a PostgreSQL database, utilizing the allorad application and RPC endpoints for data retrieval and the Go programming language for backend operations.

Prerequisites

  • Go (version 1.21 or later) for backend development.
  • PostgreSQL (version 10 or later) for database management.
  • The allorad command-line application for interacting with the Allora Chain aligned with the chain version.

Setup and Configuration

Ensure the allorad application is configured correctly to connect to the Allora Chain node, and that its version is compliant with the Allora Network to be connected to. The PostgreSQL database should be set up with the necessary tables and permissions for data storage. Modify the Go application's configuration to point to the correct database and node endpoints.

Running the Indexer

To start the indexer, execute the compiled Go application. It will begin to fetch data from the Allora Chain node and populate the PostgreSQL database with the latest blockchain information.

The application will attempt to catch up from the last block found in the database.

--MODE "full" Operation mode: 'full' for full update, 'dump' to load a dump and exit, 'empty' to create an empty DB and exit
--RESTORE_PARALLEL_JOBS 4 Number of parallel jobs (workers) to restore the dump
--EXIT_APP false Exit when the last block is processed. If false, will keep processing new blocks.
--BOOTSTRAP_BLOCKHEIGHT 0 Start synchronizing on an empty db from this block height - if 0, do not use
--MAX_CONCURRENT_TX_PROCESSING 32 Number of max concurrent routines to process tx per worker

Modes

  • dump: Simply overwrites the database by loading a dump from S3 and then exits.
  • empty: Creates an empty schema on the defined database and exits.
  • full: This is the normal updating operation mode. Performs a full update of the blockchain data. It will restore from S3 if the database is empty, then process all blocks up to the latest.
    • The regular behaviour is to pick up from the latest block in block_info table. However this behaviour can be overridden by several flags.
    • BOOTSTRAP_BLOCKHEIGHT: If this is set to a number different from 0, it will start from that block. Can be useful after initializing an empty schema with empty mode, or just start with a recent block.
    • Specifying valid S3 credentials and files, will attempt to download such dump if it exists, reload it onto the database and pick up from the last entry on that dump.

Performance Tuning

  • WORKERS_NUM: Number of processor routines running concurrently.
  • MAX_CONCURRENT_TX_PROCESSING: Each processor may span a number of subprocesses to process an event/tx, which is controlled by this env var.
  • Remember - you can configure your max connection in the pg pool by adding ?pool_max_conns=32 to your CONNECTION.

Examples

Note: add to the examples below the AWS_ACCESS_KEY, AWS_SECRET_KEY, S3_BUCKET_NAME and S3_FILE_KEY where S3 dumps are used, and CONNECTION (of the type postgres://default:password@db:5432/app) where the database is hosted.

  1. Run in full mode with 8 workers, after having restored the latest dump from S3:

    ./allora-indexer --MODE=full --WORKERS_NUM=8
    
  2. Restore the latest dump from S3:

    ./allora-indexer --MODE=dump --S3_FILE_KEY=latest
    
  3. Create an empty database (to examine schema and generate data, useful for testing purposes):

    ./allora-indexer --MODE=empty
    
  4. Run in full mode and exit when caught up (useful to run as a cron job):

    ./allora-indexer --MODE=full --EXIT_APP=true
    

Recreation of database

To recreate the database in the provided docker compose setup, the volume can be removed with the following command:

docker compose down
docker compose volume rm allora-indexer_postgres_data
# In case of error, check the volume name with: docker volume ls
