Hardware Requirements

You'll need a few pieces of hardware in order to be able to work with Z-Wave Over IP:

  • Raspberry Pi 3
  • SD Card (at least 2GB)
  • Bridge Controller UZB
  • Devices that speak Z-Wave

Z-Wave UZB sticks loaded with the Bridge Controller library can be purchased from Digi-Key. It is not required to sign an NDA when purchasing a UZB, but because of limitations in Digi-Key's online system, you may be asked to sign one. If you'd prefer not signing the NDA you can place your order with Digi-Key over the phone. Any UZB, UZB2 or UZB3 will work with zipgateway as long as it is one with a Bridge Controller library - which is indicated by the inclusion of BRG in the part number. UZB sticks are region-specific, so take care to pick one for frequency region you're working in.

Z-Wave devices operate on frequencies that are specific to the regions they're intended to work in. If you purchase any Z-Wave devices to follow this guide, ensure that they use the frequency that is used in your geographical region - and of course, that all the devices in your network use the same frequency.
