The Northeastern Commons project is based on the Humanities Commons project maintained by the Modern Language Association. Many of the custom plugins created for HCommons have been forked and modified to fit the needs of Northeastern Commons. These modified plugins are stored in the NEU Libraries on GitHub.
The site structure uses the Roots framework to manage and separate application functionality from WordPress core and provide a better foundation for distributed development.
Northeastern Commons is a WordPress Multi-Network. There are several different groups that utilize Northeastern Commons and each is separated into its own network giving it control over plugins and network level settings.
Northeastern Commons utilizes Shibboleth for handling single sign on with the universities Active Directory database. Several of the networks use Shibboleth as the default login method while the Nextend Social Login plugin is also used on some networks to handle social login and registration.
ElasticSearch is used to handle global site search and is connected using the ElasticPress and ElasticPress BuddyPress plugins. ElasticSearch is run on a separate server but can be simulated on a local environment for development purposes.
