Satellite Imagery Information

This is a list of all of the satellite imagery providers that we have access to, with information about their capabilities. Check the Google Doc for access information.

  • 3-5M resolution.
  • Commercial Data, California data appears to be released CC BY-SA
  • Very regular updates, and has many images of the same area.
  • We have an Explorer account.
  • Runs on Amazon EC2 (US West 2 Region, in Oregon) and recommends processing there.

Band 8 (polyspectral)

  • 30M resolution, but highly multispectral. Polyspectral data at 15M.
  • US Government data. Free access.
  • Each sensor has its own tif image—many sensors.
  • Recent data is hosted on Amazon S3
  • Nice python command line tool

Google Maps

  • ~0.3M/pixel, at zoom level 19.
  • Free until exceeding 25,000 map loads per day for 90 consecutive days.
  • $0.50 USD / 1,000 additional map loads above 25,000 per day after reaching 25,000 map load / 90 day usage limit, up to 1,000,000 daily
  • 1,000,000 images would be $500 (or 40 days of free access)
