I'm always frustrated when my ally declares war on me, because in our relations there isn't any hint, that he can do this. I remember that in original civ there was such value as "our borders are too close!" and it was enough.
When he thinks about their motivations to attack and he chooses me, then he looks at our relationships and he can't declare war if we are friends.
Instead, he may demand some kind of "gift" from me and if I don't agree, our relationship deteriorates.
Alternative Approaches
In our relations just need to be hint, that he may be a psychopath and in an instant from our great relationship he may become an enemy.
We just need to a bit merge relations with motivations, and if he has those motivations, our relations suffer from this.
Additional Context
Sometimes when you are surrounded by larger civilizations, you have no chance to defend yourself against all of them militarily and there should be your only resort to pay to maintain good relations.
So he can ask me politely "My dear! Isn't our friendship worth such a sum? :)" and you can read it as "Give me gold or i will destroy you"
