I tried experimenting with background services a few months ago to speed up load times, but realized it wasn't worth it for a few reasons:

• The page itself only needs 200kb of basic javascript to be operational, which is around 15ms of load time, or about 1 frame at 60hz. Optimizing the page even more will be very difficult.
• Backgrounds & blur effects are slowing down the page load, but this is not something the browser can preload (based on my current knowledge)
• What really adds to the load time is the extension storage, which needs to be up to date on every new tab. It is slow because the HTML page asks for the storage in another process asynchronously, and has to wait for the response to display something.

When I tried to load Bonjourr in a background service to speed up the extension storage issue, it took longer to "stream" the response from the background to the new tab than to load the page from scratch. It had to go from one process to another, and still had to paint huge backgrounds and blur effects.

I should add that someone smarter than me might find a way speed up page loads (without adding permissions), but for now that's all I got...
