Configuration Macros with Salt Clients

Hi there,
with the old traditional clients I used variables within my configuration files very often.
This is not possible anymore. I'm sure this could be done with salt also, but I'm not really into this.
Maybe someone could provide an example how to deploy a file and modify some text within this file with salt?
