Describe the bug

I downloaded the bazzite-nvidia-stable image a few hours ago to give it a try and installed it on my System on a seperate drive to my Windows install. So far so good.

But I noticed that the Nvidia driver was still 550... even though the new update is supposed to ship with 555. I guessed that maybe the image wasnt updated yet and went ahead and used the builtin Updater to update. I waited for it to finish and rebooted.

After booting into the new image, I get the login prompt as normal but as soon as I finish, I just get a black screen and nothing happens after that. No hotkeys do anything (not even CTRL+ALT+Fx)

What did you expect to happen?

I expected it to not break with the first update

Output of rpm-ostree status

No response

Hardware

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Nvidia RTX 4090
1x HDR Monitor, 1x. Non-HDR Monitor (according to some in the Discord this may be the issue)

Okay so I reinstalled and updated without enabling HDR and it worked without a problem. So it seems to have something to do with HDR.

Hi, I'm having the same problem. Desktop Nvidia GPU (2080 Ti) latest version, Bazzite has been working great last week. I tried 4K HDR and worked great.

After rebooting the system, the same as OP happens, grub shows, then splash screen. Then the login sound, black screen system is unresponsive. No Ctrl+ALT+F2, nothing.

If I reboot and Ctrl+ALT+F2 during splash screen, it shows on screen the login TTY, but it's unresponsive also.

I don't want to reinstall all again... Is there a way to fix it?

EDIT: I fixed it, with a rescue live usb I edited .config/kwinoutputconfig.json as suggested here (https://lemmy.world/post/14155065), sertting HighDynamicRange and WideColorGamut to false. I could boot again, guess it's better to leave HDR off for now.

Hi, @requ1Re. I'm Dosu, and I'm helping the bazzite team manage their backlog. I'm marking this issue as stale.

Issue Summary

  • Black screen issue after updating Nvidia driver from version 550 to 555 on bazzite-nvidia-stable image.
  • You resolved the issue by reinstalling and updating without enabling HDR.
  • Another user, @pungentstentch, fixed it by editing .config/kwinoutputconfig.json to disable HDR settings.
  • Both solutions suggest HDR settings as the root cause.

Next Steps

  • Is this issue still relevant with the latest version of the bazzite repository? If so, please comment to keep the discussion open.
  • If no further activity occurs, this issue will be automatically closed in 14 days.

Thank you for your understanding and contribution!
