One feature of the compiz advanced desktop zoom plugin from the good old gnome2 times that I'm missing very much in your script:

a key combination to stop the zoom area to follow the mouse, or in other words to lock the zoom area to a fixed area, ignoring any mousemovement until the key combination is pressed again.
