This sharding mechanism is mostly aimed at combining array chunks into different units. My current understanding of this store implementation is that a folder can be relayed onto another store, which seems to tackle other use cases. IMO it would be great to have a clear understanding of the differences and common usage patterns. What's your view on this, @thewtex?

Great to see this project! We are currently working on a sharding mechanism for zarr v3, which will be part of the specification and is intended to be available broadly across implementations. You can find the current WIP state of the specification here:
