What do you guys think of refactoring into the codegen crate?

It's not clear to me that it would provide much benefit. Would you want to do a proof-of-concept and compare the before and after?

I'm also a little concerned that the repo hasn't been touched in over two years. Is it maintained?

It got updated 7 mo ago. There's been some strange changing of hands but there's a relatively active fork with ownership. I think it might be worth presenting a PoC I'll take a swing at this and report back. I'm also not convinced this is apparently useful.
