Item public checkbox returns to original state after being checked/un-checked

This happens in the admin view in item lists in both the items page (Curation => Items) and the recently updated page (Dashboar => Recently Updated Items). I don't see this behavior in spotilght so I think it's something specific to Exhibits.

If I un-check the checkbox the public status switches to private, but then the checkbox returns to displaying as checked.
