Is there any well-supported fork out there?

Active development of this library stopped, when Google changed material design guidelines and steppers became archived. That happened around beginning of 2018.

According to this, it's not really discouraged to use steppers but it has rather not been documented in the new website.

This project is still viable and working. I'm going to update my fork for androidx and modernize the code. I'll post back here when it's ready. But you can drop this into a current project and have it working with just a few modifications to some imports.
