Ember Travel Mug support

This worked extremely smoothly for my Ember Mug, but it doesn't detect my Ember Travel Mug at all. I am more than happy to help test or provide debug information that could help get the travel mug supported.

Awesome, I'm glad it worked for your mug. Oh certainly. I can see what I can do. It's a bit difficult without the device. Do you know what name it boardcasts over Bluetooth when you try to pair with it? For example the Ember mug shows up as Ember Ceramic Mug. I need to put that name in the config so that Home Assistant can link it to this integration.

If you are comfortable using command line we can quickly test it in the Python library this integration uses, if not I can create a special beta build of this integration that you can install and try it out in Home Assistant, but I'm not sure what state it will be in. I know some things like volume are not yet implented as I had no values to test with.

I can definitely use the command line! I was considering creating a PR myself, but don't know much about how the Ember works.

On my phone's pairing request, it's called "Ember Travel M" in two places, but I wonder if the name might be getting cut off and maybe it's actually "Ember Travel Mug"

I attempted to run bluetoothctl in my HA container to find the device, but the deluge of Bluetooth devices was overwhelming and none of them listed their name so I wasn't sure how to figure out which one to query further.

Awesome! I think that full name makes sense given the name for the standard mug. I've created a branch (travel-mug) in the other project if you want to try and see if it discovers it. You can clone or fork the project, you should just need Python 3.9+ (ideally 3.10+ as that's what home assistant supports) and poetry and obviously as computer with a bluetooth adapter. You can run:

poetry install
poetry run ember-mug discover

To try it out. That should discover the travel mug if it is in pairing mode. You can then you find/poll and such to try it out. It may crash if it runs into some new things. You can make a PR on that project and once that one can read/write the info OK we can work on adding it here. I tried to document it as best as I could, but don't hesitate to ask questions or open issues.

Someone made me realize there was "Cup" as well. So, I made some changes to support it as it is basically identical, minus the name. In the process, I added a debug option which might help with your Travel Mug tests.
If you check of "Debug" when adding the integration or use the --debug flag in the CLI interface It will print the services and characteristics of the device when it connects. The Integration will also now detect and try to connect to the Travel mug as of 0.6.1-beta-1 if you want to try it out. It will probably raise some errors, but I can help fix them if you need.

Aha, progress! The real name actually is "Ember Travel M" for some reason, I guess they wanted or needed to keep the name short.

HA discovers it perfectly with that name in manifest.json! I'm going to do some more testing now that it's detected.

I'm unsure which of these messages relates to my original Ember Mug and which are related to the Travel Mug, though the travel mug is the only one I have the additional debug option set for.

Perhaps I should delete my Ember Mug from HA so that the output only relates to the Travel Mug for easier separation.

It can't change color, the lights are always white on the travel mug. IIRC I have the original Travel Mug, so the 2 or 2+ versions might be different in some way as well.

I enabled both of the checkboxes for developer/debug options when adding the integration, but what's above are the only Ember-related things in my logs. Perhaps because the integration never finishes setting up, it doesn't get far enough to print extra information?

Ok, I don't know. Let's focus on the one you have then for now.
Then probably we'll have to exclude the LED characteristic for the Travel mug in order to get it to setup. Can you try the debug mode to get it to list the characteristics it finds and then I'll try to add methods to pull their values and we can check what they contain and try and parse them.
Just remove your device and when you add it again check the bottom checkbox which should say something like "Log services and characteristics for development upon connection"

Thanks for your help! I did check that box, but I pasted all of the logs from the ember_mug integration above so I'm not certain what's wrong. I'll delete it and restart HA again to double-check!

I'm comfortable installing or cloning the python library. I'm a bit ignorant as far as bluetooth development, so I'm struggling to figure out where to or how to run it successfully.

I tried installing it in my local devcontainer, on my Windows host machine, and on my Ubuntu server, but haven't had any luck yet. On my server I think it only fails because bluez isn't installed, but I'm hesitant to install it because I don't want it to cause any conflicts with using the same BT adapter for my Home Assistant OS running in a VirtualBox container with its own version of bluez.

Would the CLI work somehow inside of my HA OS instance? Otherwise, do you think it'd work on a Raspberry Pi 3 or 4? I could run it there without worrying about it affecting anything else I've got on my server.

This isn't urgent because I can just modify it myself for debugging purposes, but for the next release could you change the name in manifest.json to Ember Travel M as well?

Oh yeah, I get that. Yeah, you could in theory run it on HA OS directly, you could use the Terminal Add-on or SSH. You would just have to install the dependencies in the container. A raspberry pi would also be fine as long you had Python 3.10+ and poetry installed.
Either way, just remember to remove the device from Home Assistant before trying to connect elsewhere so they don't fight over it.

And the name of the mug in HA is "BEN" which is the same custom text I have configured for the mug to display on the screen btw.

You were right about the main exception being from google_pubsub, I should have skipped that one, but the line right after that is:

That one seems like it must be from the mug.

A few notes about functionality:

1. In the app there is a Personalize menu and then the text says "Name you Ember Mug" so I think name is appropriate.
2. The app also includes a "Temperature Lock" toggle that makes the temperature up and down buttons inactive when turned on.
3. It also includes a "Click sound on dial volume" with a slider that controls how loud the clicks are when using the temperature controls on the device.

I tried checking the two checkboxes when setting up my standard Ember Mug as a sanity check, and I'm not getting the additional debug output for that either, so it seems like something must be up with my setup. I do see lots of debug messages from ember_mug (thousands of lines since enabling debug logging earlier today), but the text "Logging all services that were discovered" doesn't show up anywhere and I'm not seeing anything relevant as far as listing all of the available services.

I'll try with the boxes unchecked and see if it makes any difference in my output.

I have never used the integration, but from the description it says:

The google_pubsub integration allows you to hook into the Home Assistant event bus and send events to Google Cloud Pub/Sub.

It seems to be trying to serialize data from this integration and can't, but the error is not part of this integration. There seems to be an option to configure a filter, so you could exclude entities from the Ember Mug integration for now.

Unchecking it will just not do anything. If that stil doesn't work, there is always the cli method as mentioned before.

As a test, I'm working on another beta of the integration which will attempt to read the volume attribute so we can see if that is for your mug and what values it contains.

Ok, so I went through and it looks like the only extra attribute the Travel mug has is the "volume" so I restored the liquid level, because it seems like it does have it (although, the value might be different). I created a third beta of 0.7.0 which should allow for better detection and also create an entity for the volume attribute so we can see what it contains. So, maybe if you can try checking what the output is of that at a few different levels that would be cool thanks. Maybe liquid level too, the mug goes from 0-30, maybe the travel mug goes beyond that so you might get percentages over 100%, if so please let me know.

One side note: This is definitely not an important issue since you can rename it, but it would be neat if the default title of the discovered mug was Ember Travel Mug instead of using the Bluetooth name Ember Travel M. That may just be a matter of preference though, and there are probably more important things to deal with.

The Name sensor that looks like it should allow renaming it shows up as Unavailable for me currently. And the volume is showing as "2" currently when it's got nothing in it. I will see what other values it shows soon.

Since you mentioned the extra volume sensor will be gone in the next release, I think everything else that is already present is fully working! I would be happy with the current Ember Travel Mug support in the next official release if we haven't figured out the lock yet, with the hope that we can incorporate support for the lock feature in a later release.

I have an Android so I can go that route if needed. Theoretically for plan A, would that involve trying to connect the mug to both systems and toggling the lock on and off repeatedly to see if any of the events are visible to Home Assistant?

Yeah, it would simply be to try to connect to the app and change the lock whilst connected to home assistant and seeing if you get any events when you do or if you can dump the characteristics again during that time. It may take a few tries and you may need to toggle off the phone Bluetooth so home assistant can reconnect. They're quite possessive over the mug. Haha

What do you think the fastest way would be to reconnect the mug to Home Assistant when it connects to the app and starts throwing the error that the Bluetooth address can't be found? Is it best to just wait for it to recover on its own, or would reloading the integration or performing some other action potentially reconnect it sooner so I have a better chance of catching the events?

Um, it should automatically reconnect after a while but if it takes to long, once you disconnect Bluetooth on your phone you can put it in pairing mode and that should ensure it reconnects faster.
