Fields can disappear unexpectedly when hiding empty fields is enabled

Describe the bug
We have a feature for hiding empty fields. When it's activated fields can vanish unexpectedly when a user empties them.
That's not good.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Turn on Hiding empty fields
2. Clear a field

Expected behavior
At the very least the field should stay visible while it has focus. Perhaps it should even stay visible until the user navigates away from the selected entry.
