Hmm I will have a look, in the meantime you could try adding the shapes with the annotation widget (in the plugin menu). With the widget open and 1 element from spatialdata, open a shapes layer and press the button link to spatialdata. Then you can add annotation classes, specify the colors and also change name of an annotation class by clicking on the text. At the bottom of the widget you also find a button to save back to spatialdata
