I can think of the following scenario:

Firmware sets stepperDcInvertedPins to 'true' on start up

If one restores a tune from older unit it could be overwriting stepperDcInvertedPins to false. Until reboot stepperDcInvertedPins value would stay false. That could cause smoke.

This never happened again, I keep selling with no issue. Even the smoke board was fine
