Condense option #3253

I cannot get the condense option to work:

The option information from verovio -h full:

 --condense <s>                 Control condensed score layout (default: "auto"; other values: "none", "encoded")
 --condense-first-page          When condensing a score also condense the first page
 --condense-not-last-system     When condensing a score never condense the last system
 --condense-tempo-pages         When condensing a score also condense pages with a tempo change

The three options are auto, none and encoded. So firstly I assume that condensing is the default behavior:

Rendering:

Where the top staff is expected to be hidden on the second and third systems.

I also tried adding --condense-first-page, but that did not change the rendering. I am wondering about the name of that option, as I would expect it to be --condense-first-system.

I tried --condense none, and that worked perfectly 😃 : the rendering was the same as above.

For the other option --condense encoded how is that encoded in the score?

Also, I would like to change the condense behavior thoughout the score, so I am presuming that that could be code, and then adding --condense encoded would do what I want. Is that possible?

I see <scoreFormat> in the documentation: https://music-encoding.org/guidelines/v4/content/metadata.html and https://music-encoding.org/guidelines/v4/elements/scoreformat.html but there is no documentation for scoreFormat (and its relation to condensing the score) other than it being listed on that page. But that is the on the metadata page, so probably unrelated.

Verovio thinks that your score is a trio, where you usually would not remove single lines.

If you add another staffGrp --condense auto works as expected:

If you insist on condensing your score, add optimize="true" to your scoreDef and use --condense encoded:

Thanks! But I will note that it seems the condense option is over-engineered. In this case verovio is making a false assumption that three staves makes a trio.

I would expect that --condense encoded would be the default behavior.

I would expect --condense none to guarantee that there is no condensation (in other words, prevent scoreDef@optimize="true").

Then --condense auto would be the same as now, but not the default behavior.

Then --condense all would be a way of forcing condensation for any staff (stronger than --condense auto which would prevent the grand staff from going to a single staff, or the trio case given above).
