If I'm correct the output circuit looks to be highly standard (from the Atari schematic), and there is nothing short circuiting the outputs.
As far as I know this core doesn't get it correct either. There may be something I'm missing (ignore the blips that are there for some reason)... WAV recording.zip

I noticed that MAME's AY-3-8910 core gets the sound in Fast Freddie/Fly Boy wrong at the moment; the envelope decay is supposed to be way less shallow (and when I try to hook it up to resistor output, the envelope decay is completely broken).
