I got some decent results running PDF's through GNU Ocrad. http://records.oaklandnet.com/request/3744

gs -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -sDEVICE=pnmraw -r300 -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sOutputFile=- -q filename.ps | ocrad

If you have ghostscript and ocrad installed it works pretty alright.
