I think it'd be a very good feature to allow setting the size for specific applets or segments if that would be a lot easier to implement.

The issue this would solve for me is mainly that I want my app tray, library button and user session button in the start segment to be larger than the applets in the right segment. Apart from the fact that a lot of application icons that appear there due to the notification tray don't look very nice when larger, it also takes quite a lot of space which severely limits the amount of applets I can use while still having enough space for the app tray to expand.

While this isn't officially supported, a trick I've used before is to copy desktop files to ~/.local/share/applications for applets that I want to be smaller. You can add the env COSMIC_PANEL_SIZE=XS variable in the Exec field of each of these custom desktop files to override the configured size variable which is normally set by the panel. Just don't forget to remove them or update them if you decide to make them a different size in the future 😅
