Portability

Mdm is explicitly designed to be easily portable anywhere you can drop an archive-file-format-of-your-choice.

Mdm is distributed as a java jar, and so requires a java runtime (1.6 and above is supported). (If you prefer not to deploy a JRE, consider using the robovm compiler to produce native binaries for your platform of choice.)

Mdm has no external dependencies -- in particular, it does NOT require a system-installed git, nor is it capable of breaking because of variations of system installed git versions. (Mdm uses the excellent jgit project for a portable full-featured git implementation.)

Mdm observes the name and email configured in your user gitconfig, but ignores all other values.

Mdm is under 2 megabytes. It fits on a jumpdrive -- and if it wasn't obvious by now, mdm certainly won't try to connect to the internet in order to download plugins before gracing you with a list of subcommands, nor will it put critical components of itself in your home directory just to surprise you by failing when you try to drag-and-drop the mdm executable.

Long story short, it actually makes sense to ship mdm around in a completely offline/sneakernet fashion -- this is considered a critical design goal.
