The interaction generally needs to be made a bit more user-friendly/self-explanatory. But in addition we should also include some kind of "guided tour" feature that's automatically activated on first use, and which provides hints on what users can do with a particular UI element when they first encounter it.

I made some first tests with Joyride & that's looks like a fairly easy-to-implement solution.
