How to Authenticate API for Gists?

I use the GitHub CLI gh to authenticate via gh auth login. While working as expected for normal git repos, this method of authentication does not extend to Gists, which still ask for my credentials whenever I make a change. I'm sure I am missing a step, but I am struggling to find the solution in the docs or via google. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!
