Resumes not uploading #558

I believe these repeated php warnings when adding candidates with resumes may be part of the issue: |
Urgent help needed please respond, thanks |
Hi ronswift2,
Even though I did some analysis around line 192 of <opencats-project>/modules/candidates/Add.tpl, my answers may take us to multiple directions.
The issue may probably have nothing to do with the PHP version 7.4 and more on the array key-value reference. However, before we jump-in with conclusions and assumptions, this issue requires more clarification.
Help us get a better picture of the actions you’ve taken, step-by-step, from login to the issue, as such:
* Describe your system you employed to navigate and open the app, i.e.:
* Operating System.
* Browser.
* Describe your steps taken -i.e.:
* high level but with as much detail possible.
* Describe how did you conclude there was an issue?
* Was there a visual indicator?
* Did the screen stop responding?
* Did the screen show blank?
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Shant Adam

The operating system is Ubuntu Linux 20.04
Browsers: Chromium and Firefox
Steps: Log in as administrator and retrieve applicant file. Then select upload resume and attempt to apply resume to applicant file. Shows resume uploaded successfully and when dialog closes no change to file.
Also, when an applicant applies to a position online via the careers tab and attaches a resume the applicant file is added to the system without the resume. When the resume is uploaded it appears garbled.
When the file is submitted it then shows a blank screen.
The candidate that I used to show what is occurring has another entry in their file that shows they applied to another position (i.e. Systems Analyst) and downloaded a resume. Clicking on the download shows the garbled distorted file.
The uploaded resume file had a docx extension but was converted to docx.txt.
Thanks

Thanks, Ron, for your insights.
After all, Ron, what you described in your last email seems to me that the issue lies within the resume file upload procedure - more specifically the file parsing issue.
I figured the issue was not with the template but with some unknown factor that triggered for the template to break. We can put aside your initially reported issue with <opencats-project>/modules/candidates/Add.tpl file on line 192 and, unfortunately, we’ll have to focus back on the app’s initial setup and configuration. Majority of times a file not being parsed as expected has to do with incomplete server parsing module setup, or config.
Now, let me ask you, Ron, the following questions:
* Is OpenCATS installed on your current (local) Ubuntu OS?
* Did you setup, and configure the system yourself?
* Were instructions followed as described in the Install on Ubuntu Documentation<https://opencats-documentation.readthedocs.io/en/latest/Install-Ubuntu-16.04.html>?
* While going through the outdated instructions consider your LAMP system components and versions - Ubuntu 20, Apache 2.4, MariaDB 10.3, and PHP v7.4.
* The installation instructions require the following binary files to available on your OS:
* /usr/bin/antiword
* /usr/bin/pdftotext
* /usr/bin/html2text
* /usr/bin/unrtf
* Make sure you follow the Install Resume Indexing Tools<https://opencats-documentation.readthedocs.io/en/latest/Install-Ubuntu-16.04.html#install-resume-indexing-tools>.
* Are the above listed binaries installed and located at the right location on your OS?
* You can find out by running the ‘ls’ command line on each file.
* If not under /usr/bin, see if it’s under /usr/local/bin.
* If not installed, use “apt-get” to install the missing ones and configure.
* Equally important is Step 5 of Install the OpenCATS Software<https://opencats-documentation.readthedocs.io/en/latest/Install-Ubuntu-16.04.html#install-the-opencats-software>:
* Have your email system configured and functioning correctly.
* You can check the project’s config file.
* Lastly, is the file being uploaded a MS Word DOC, PDF, or RTF format?
* (Assumption) Test, first, to see if the issue is with a .docx extension and not .doc, .pdf, or .rtf.

Shant Adam

I was previously running opencats v9.3 on another server using Ubuntu 16.04.
When I installed Opencats v9.6 on Ubuntu 20.04 server I followed the guide.
The binary files antiword, pdftotext, html2text and unrtf are all in /usr/bin and found in the installation process (I tried reinstalling these binary programs including poppler-utils and that did not correct the parsing issue).
I used the files on Github, https://github.com/opencats/OpenCATS/releases/tag/0.9.6 and followed the install guide for a new setup using Apache2, php7.4 and mysql/mariadb.
Upon completion, I copied over the attachments directory and restored the Mysql database from v9.3 to the new version.
The server is also running Bitdefender antivirus/malware and the ufw firewall settings are:

It appears nothing has changed since I copied it over from v9.3
I trust that this added information will lead to a fix.

* Describe your steps taken -i.e.:

* Describe how did you conclude there was an issue?
* Was there a visual indicator?
* Did the screen stop responding?
* Did the screen show blank?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Ron,
One (1) important item that stood out to my attention and sounded alarming from your described actions taken while migrating, i.e.:
- Restored the new v0.9.6 DB from the old version 0.9.3.
Questions:
- I’m curious how you managed to ingest the data into the new database structure.
- Did you compare the two sql files for changes?
I would revisit the latter action and make sure nothing is broken in the database.
P.S.: If there are any other items you’ve migrated from the old version to the new one, it’s ought to be double checked.
Regards,
Shant Adam

I used the files on Github, https://github.com/opencats/OpenCATS/releases/tag/0.9.6 and followed the install guide for a new setup using Apache2, php7.4 and mysql/mariadb.
Upon completion, I copied over the attachments directory and restored the Mysql database from v9.3 to the new version.

Subject: Re: [opencats/OpenCATS] Resumes not uploading (Issue #558)
* /usr/bin/antiword
* /usr/bin/pdftotext
* /usr/bin/html2text
* /usr/bin/unrtf

* Operating System.
* Browser.
* Describe your steps taken -i.e.:
* high level but with as much detail possible.
* Describe how did you conclude there was an issue?
* Was there a visual indicator?
* Did the screen stop responding?
* Did the screen show blank?
Thank you in advance.

All of the old v9.3 data is accessible in v9.6 to include all candidate information, activities and resumes.
We can access the old resumes and search on them.
The attachments folder from v9.3 was copied over v9.6 install.
It is difficult to look at the two versions sql files for changes without knowing specifically what tables to focus on.
There is two+ years of applicant data that was migrated from v9.3.

Hi Ron,
As I figured, your statement “it is difficult to look at the two versions of SQL files for changes” tells me that the old database was ingested without the due diligence of analysis. Especially, on a 2-year data collection.
Unfortunately, migrations are not as simple as theoretically seems like versus applied. My intuition tells me, Ron, your concerning issue lies within your database. Which will call for the painstaking ETL process to analyze each SQL table and probably map accordingly.
If you’re “visual”, I recommend using “MySQL Workbench<https://www.mysql.com/products/workbench/>”, and “merge<https://meldmerge.org/>” or “kdiff<http://kdiff3.sourceforge.net/>” or “diffuse<http://diffuse.sourceforge.net/>”. Otherwise, command line tools “diff3”, “mysql”, “mysqldump”, and “mysqlimport”.
After all, Ron, I highly recommend you do your due diligence to carefully analyze the old database’s dumped SQL files versus the new ones and handle the data ingestion with care. Once you handle the latter procedure then if issue persists, we’d be happy to help further. Thank you.
Regards,
Shant Adam

All of the old v9.3 data is accessible in v9.6 to include all candidate information, activities and resumes.
We can access the old resumes and search on them.
The attachments folder from v9.3 was copied over v9.6 install.
It is difficult to look at the two versions sql files for changes without knowing specifically what tables to focus on.
There is two+ years of applicant data that was migrated from v9.3.

Hi Ron,
One (1) important item that stood out to my attention and sounded alarming from your described actions taken while migrating, i.e.:
- Restored the new v0.9.6 DB from the old version 0.9.3.
Questions:
- I’m curious how you managed to ingest the data into the new database structure.
- Did you compare the two sql files for changes?
I would revisit the latter action and make sure nothing is broken in the database.
P.S.: If there are any other items you’ve migrated from the old version to the new one, it’s ought to be double checked.

Shant Adam

The binary files antiword, pdftotext, html2text and unrtf are all in /usr/bin and found in the installation process (I tried reinstalling these binary programs including poppler-utils and that did not correct the parsing issue).
I used the files on Github, https://github.com/opencats/OpenCATS/releases/tag/0.9.6 and followed the install guide for a new setup using Apache2, php7.4 and mysql/mariadb.
Upon completion, I copied over the attachments directory and restored the Mysql database from v9.3 to the new version.

Subject: Re: [opencats/OpenCATS] Resumes not uploading (Issue #558)
* /usr/bin/antiword
* /usr/bin/pdftotext
* /usr/bin/html2text
* /usr/bin/unrtf

Even though I did some analysis around line 192 of <opencats-project>/modules/candidates/Add.tpl, my answers may take us to multiple directions.

The documentation did not state that I needed to do a comparison of mysql/mariadb structure when updating using the manual non-gui process.
Considering the issue I had previously with job and candidate data lists not showing I should have guessed that there was a change in databases between the two versions, v9.3 and v9.6.
Do you offer your services for hire to fix this for me and if so please provide an estimate.
The old version v9.3 is still on one of my servers running Ubuntu 16.04 but I am concerned about security issues with opencats on that box.

Hi Ron,
I certainly hear the need for OpenCATS documentation requiring additional migration path procedure guidance. However, the current version is for clean install.
In an ideal scenario a wizard-based application would walkthrough an admin while upgrading and migrating. However, in this case, due to OpenCATS team resource restrains the investment efforts are more focused on resolving pending issues versus support tool development.
As for the data migration support, I would certainly see to be of help to you, Ron. kindly requesting to please send me an email at ***@***.******@***.***> and I’ll see to share with you a cost-effective estimate. Thank you, Ron.

Hi Ron,
As I figured, your statement “it is difficult to look at the two versions of SQL files for changes” tells me that the old database was ingested without the due diligence of analysis.
Thank you.

Subject: Re: [opencats/OpenCATS] Resumes not uploading (Issue #558)
* /usr/bin/antiword
* /usr/bin/pdftotext
* /usr/bin/html2text
* /usr/bin/unrtf

Thanks

Hi ronswift2,
Even though I did some analysis around line 192 of <opencats-project>/modules/candidates/Add.tpl, my answers may take us to multiple directions.
The issue may probably have nothing to do with the PHP version 7.4 and more on the array key-value reference. However, before we jump-in with conclusions and assumptions, this issue requires more clarification.
Help us get a better picture of the actions you’ve taken, step-by-step, from login to the issue, as such:
* Describe your system you employed to navigate and open the app, i.e.:
* Operating System.
* Browser.
* Describe your steps taken -i.e.:
* high level but with as much detail possible.
* Describe how did you conclude there was an issue?
* Was there a visual indicator?
* Did the screen stop responding?
* Did the screen show blank?
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Shant Adam

I also just tried to manually upload a single resume, and although the dialog box would accept the file name of the file I selected, it wouldn't add the resume to the database. I just installed the new code from GitHub, and imported my own mysqldump backup. Am I in the same boat as ronswift2? |
Hi Zommiest2,
While the project tends to develop in an ad hoc fashion with multiple community member input sources with an attempt to deliver best of the product’s requirements, some minor and others major, like security and underlying tech upgrades, we do our best with limited resources to validate and verify the functional aspect of the application.
On the flip side, an open source project strives because of its supporting patrons. We certainly appreciate for our active community to reporting on their both good experiences and not so good encountered issues. It certainly is very helpful to have insightful eyes from our users for the betterment of the product.
My understanding, based on my offline chat with Ron, the issue is encountered with external applicants while using the external application user interface to apply for jobs. The problem is indeed related with the resume not being parsed/rendered as expected. However, the cadidate profile is being created successfully.
I have foreseen to invest some time to investigate the latest release around this issue with an attempt to pinpoint the causing factor. However, I will ask that we patient till this weekend. Thank you.

It is correct that the issue appears when external candidates apply and the resume is not parsed and added to the applicant file.
We have also attempted to add the resume to the new applicant file on the back-end as an administrator and that also fails but does not generate an error.

I’m taking note of the issue around a candidate’s resume attachment. I will see over the weekend to investigate and report back. It’s a promise.
We’ve taken the app from 2021 to 2022 so far with multiple patches and upgrades, and I’m sure a little more stretch we’ll get it to be a more stable one. We’re appreciative of the interest demonstrated by the users community in the improvement of this wonderful unique product. Thank you.

Thank you.
Regards,
Shant Adam

Hi Ron; Hi Zoomiest2,
Take note, after my voluntary attempt to squeeze-in time for the analysis of the issue in question over the weekend, between my overwhelming business and personal priorities, unfortunately, resulted in unsatisfying outcome.
After all, I figured it’s best to keep you in the loop and not hold you on a string. The latter investigation matter will require more time, at this stage of the analysis, I’m certain that I can’t promise an immediate result from my end.
Your kind understanding is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you.

Glad to hear back from you, Ron.
Not to be discouraged. My email was simply to keep you in the loop of my progress.
My initial analysis was not satisfactory enough for me and it required more time off my plate.
However, let’s not drop hopes, I will invest time throughout this week, as time permits, to see a resolution to this blocker issue. Let’s aim till end of this upcoming weekend. Would this ease some concerns?

Thanks that addresses my concerns.
One thing that I have noticed is that the system is adding a .txt extension to uploaded resume files with (doc, docx, pdf or rtl) extensions.
That is strange behavior.

Attached are the resume files that were uploaded to the server and not applied to the database.
They all have a txt extension added and some were php files with dubious content.
I thought that this might be helpful in looking at the problem.

Thank you.

Hi Ron; Hi Zoomiest2,
Take note, after my voluntary attempt to squeeze-in time for the analysis of the issue in question over the weekend, between my overwhelming business and personal priorities, unfortunately, resulted in unsatisfying outcome.
After all, I figured it’s best to keep you in the loop and not hold you on a string. The latter investigation matter will require more time, at this stage of the analysis, I’m certain that I can’t promise an immediate result from my end.
Your kind understanding is highly appreciated. Thank you.

So - I have installed and run version 0.9.4 and it's working as expected (uploads work fine). I'll source v0.9.4-3 and see if the security patch disrupted the functionality. The v0.9.4-3 security patch was to address an exploit specifically for resume uploads via the career portal, so it's the most likely culprit. |
Hi @ronswift2 I've tested 0.9.6 from releases in the docker image and this works but there are a few permissions problems that need to be amended due to how docker is working - so if you check these facets in your installation you'll find the problem you have, too Firstly - make sure you have the extras (PDFtoTEXT, etc) installed, and the path to them is correct in config.php (quick and dirty fix in docker-test as docker apache is running as root - make all the files owned by root, and chmod 777 for attachments and upload.. DO NOT DO THIS ON ANYTHING BUT A TEST SYSTEM!) This has the effect in a standard docker deployment of 0.9.6 of allowing resume upload and attachments when applying for the vacancies. you can see the application in activities tab |
Expected behavior and actual behavior.
When applicant applies for a position or staff uploads a candidate resume it is not added to the candidates file
Steps to reproduce the problem.
When applying for any position the resume is not uploaded and the website goes offline.
