Is there a way to store the state in the URL query?

Can we save the store in the URL query?
That's the most reliable way (with some limitations) to restore the page to the same position upon the browser reload button hit, or when a user wants to send a link to another user...
I'm guessing a Persist Engine needs to be written, but was wondering if anyone knows of any other idea...
