Some results of recent discussions:

  • what was 'histology' should be put at the session level.
  • we will change the 'histology' name to 'anat'
  • We won't mandate but will suggest that if researchers have a number of modalities that should all go in the same folder then they should use a folder or filename with a suffix that represents that modality. We should provide a list of allowed suffixes
  • datatype within subject folder is explicitly not allowed . It is allowed in full BIDS but here we will restrict because it makes datashuttle very complex.

#46 closes the points relevant to histology to anat and storing datatypes only at session levels.

Will wait until #46 is merged, but for the last point I think we were thinking to just add a info dropdown with some text such as:

It is possible that you may collect two different modalities that full under the same datatype within a single session. For example, it is possible that intracellular patch-recordings may be collected at the same time as extracellular probe recordings. Or, [some other imaging example].

In this case, it is recommended to distinguish these two modalities using one of the mandated suffixes below. In this instance, it is permitted to break with key-value pair formatting to add the suffix.

For example,
rawdata
  sub-001
    ses-001
        funcimg
              <two example filenames e.g. sub-001_ses_001_run-001_modality.bin with two separate modalities>.

The list of permitted modality suffixes is:

need to check bids. We would need for:

patch clamp
extracellular ephys
surface recordings (?)
lots of imaging

Opened #48 to deal with the final point on modalities / suffixes.
